Oxygen Therapy And Headaches
By Carl DiNello
Although the benefits of oxygen therapy are hard for doctors to define, there is no doubt that this therapy can be an effective treatment for cluster-type headaches, migraines, and other types of headache.
How Effective Is Oxygen Therapy?
It's almost an even split. Around fifty percent of cluster headache sufferers find relief with oxygen therapy, while the remaining fifty percent receive no relief at all. If you are someone who suffers from cluster headaches, and are interested in the possible relief offered by oxygen therapy, have your doctor arrange a trial treatment for you. You have nothing to lose, and should you be in the favorable fifty percent, you will be glad you tried this treatment.
The History Of Oxygen Therapy
Oxygen therapy has been considered and studied as a possible headache treatment as early as 1939. Tests were encouraging. Dr. Alvarez of the Mayo clinic tested suffers of migraine headaches and discovered that 80% of the migraines were either relieved, or had stopped entirely after the oxygen treatment. Oxygen therapy was found to work not only on migraine type of headaches, but was also found to be effective in the relief of other types of headaches. This form of therapy was found to be most effective when administered at the onset of a migraine headache.
100% Pure Oxygen
One the first important studies regarding the potential effectiveness of oxygen therapy in the treating of cluster headaches was completed by Dr. Kudrow. If that name is familiar, the doctor is the father of actress Lisa Kudrow who played Phoebe in the very successful television show Friends. Dr. Kudrow, himself a sufferer of migraines, used 100% pure oxygen therapy to treat 52 out-patients.
His results were extremely encouraging:
* 75% of the patients given oxygen therapy reported a "complete, or almost complete cessation of head pain within 15 minutes."
* Those subjects under the age of 50 responded to the oxygen treatment slightly more favorably than those over the age of 50.
* 62% of the patients who responded well to the treatment, did so in as little as seven minutes of inhaling the oxygen.
Oxygen Better Than Air?
Definitely! A study done by Dr Fogan shows that the 100% pure oxygen itself is what was helping. Patients who inhaled 100% pure oxygen clearly showed greater improvement than had they inhaled just air.
How Does Oxygen Therapy Work?
While the benefits of oxygen therapy can be seen and proven, how and why it works still remains unclear. One theory believes that when both migraine and cluster headaches increase the flow of blood to the brain, the oxygen will cause a reduction in the blood flow, relieving pressure on nerves in the brain, resulting in relief.
Oxygen Therapy Side Effects
Unlike many prescription medications used to treat headaches, oxygen therapy has virtually no side effects, and can be used by anyone. However, Dr. Kudrow's study did record the fact that 25% of his patients did experience rebound headaches after oxygen therapy. Other than that, oxygen therapy has no other known side effects.
